Reading and Understanding Use Cases

This course provides both the theory and practice of using use cases to define the functionality of software systems. This course is based on experiences gained from working on real projects. It is a highly practical course; most of the time is spent reading and discussing use cases.

Audience: This course is for anyone who uses or validates use cases prepared by others (typically managers, testers, technical writers, or people from the user community).
Duration: 1 Day
Course Level: Beginner.
Location: Taught on location, by request.
Cost: £3,000 plus travel for the first 15 people, £100 for each additional person.

Each additional day of consultancy, working directly with your team, is £1,200.00.

Class size: 16 – 24 people.

  • What does one look like? How are multiple use cases organised?
  • How use cases fit into the overall requirements process?
  • The steps involved in writing use cases.
  • The importance of managing system scope.
  • How to read and critique use cases.
  • How stakeholder requirements (stakeholder goals) fit into the use case model.
  • Establishing the scope and level of use cases.
  • Specifying exceptional and failure situations. Identifying the failure conditions early on in the project lifecycle is one of the key benefits of the use case approach.
  • How to link use cases together.
  • Use cases and the UML standard.
  • Templates and tools for use cases.
  • Alternative writing styles, alternative formats, alternative tools
  • How to manage the use case writing process.
Room Setup: The ideal setup is with chairs grouped around tables (in groups of 4/5) with each table having their own flip chart. The course is run as a facilitated workshop, so no projection facilities are required.
